Simon Rogers is of the Ngati Porou and Kahungunu iwi from the east coast of the North Island. He trained as a carver at Te Puia in Rotorua (New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute), the premier school for Maori carving in New Zealand. He has lived and worked in Akaroa on Banks Peninsula for the past 24 years.
Simon works in wood, bone and occasionally pounamu. His work is carved completely by hand using adze and chisel. His carvings can be seen on Karaweko, the wharenui (meeting house) at Onuku marae near Akaroa and in collections throughout New Zealand and around the world. He is also a tattoo artist in ta moko (traditional Maori) and contemporary styles, working with chisels or machine. He is an amazing free-diver and spear-fisherman.
